Our Story

Appalachian UTV was born right here in Banner Elk, North Carolina — a mountain town surrounded by winding backroads, scenic overlooks, and hidden trails that most visitors never get to experience. It started with one local’s love for exploring the Blue Ridge and the realization that too many people were missing the best parts of it - the roads less traveled.

The idea was simple: make it easy for anyone to experience the raw beauty of the High Country — whether it’s a family planning a weekend adventure or someone chasing a golden hour view. Just hand over the keys to a top-tier, street-legal Polaris UTV and let them explore on their own terms.

We’re proud to serve couples, families, and property owners throughout the High Country. While our home base is in Banner Elk, we provide premium, street-legal UTV rentals across nearby towns including Boone, Blowing Rock, Newland, Jefferson, and other surrounding communities. Whether it’s a mountain getaway, a property tour, or a day spent exploring local trails, we make it simple, seamless, and unforgettable.

UTV Rules

Eligibility & Driver Requirements

  • Drivers must be 21 years or older with a valid driver’s license

  • Only authorized drivers may operate the vehicle

  • If you're unable to provide valid proof of insurance that covers rented street-legal UTVs, A $40/day insurance policy is required

  • Operating the UTV under the influence of drugs or alcohol is strictly prohibited

Where You Can Drive

  • UTVs may only be operated on public or private roads where street-legal vehicles are allowed.

  • NC State Law allows UTVs on paved roads as follows:

    • The posted speed limit must be 55 MPH or less on two-lane roads.

    • The posted speed limit must be 35 MPH or less if the road has four or more travel lanes

    • You can cross streets at intersections that don’t meet these rules

Where You CANNOT Drive

  • No off-road use allowed

  •  This includes:

    • ATV trails

    • Bike or hiking paths

    • Open fields or private land

    • Any unmarked or non-motor-vehicle-approved terrain

  • Off-road use will result in termination of your rental and additional charges

  • Exceptions: All BRMC & Eagle's Nest trails are permitted to members only.

Before, During & After Your Rental

*Deliveries do not need to follow check in/check out procedures*

  • Photo check-in and checkout required to verify condition​

  • You must upload a photo of your valid Driver's license and proof of valid, full coverage insurance prior to departure

  • Seat Belts are required to be worn at all times

  • All hands, feet, and body parts must remain inside the vehicle while it is in motion.

  • No pets allowed in the vehicle

  • No smoking in the vehicle

  • Inspect the UTV before use and report any issues prior to departure

  • Contact us immediately at (828) 989-9031 in the event of an accident, theft, or mechanical problem

  • The vehicle must be returned on time and in the same condition in which it was rented. The renter assumes full responsibility for any damage, regardless of who was operating the vehicle. Charges for damage, loss, or excessive wear may be applied to the card on file.

Fees & Additional Charges

  • Late return: $100/hour

  • Returned excessively dirty: $75 minimum cleaning fee​

  • Fuel not full: $50 refill fee (Does not apply to deliveries)

  • Lost key: $200 replacement charge

  • Smoking Fee: $100

  • Excessive wear or abuse will result in additional charges
